In Lesparre-Médoc, a fourteenth century keep is almost all that remains of a fortress that once ruled over the northern Médoc. Standing some thirty metres high, the tower still has its vaulted rooms and its rooftop platform, open to visitors, with views across the Médoc countryside and, on clear days, as far as the Gironde estuary. Run by a volunteer association, it now houses a museum on local history and traditions.
