Set in the marshland west of Carentan, the manor of Donville is a Norman house built of cob and timber, rebuilt in 1778 for a prosperous farmer who wanted a country retreat. Now privately owned and open to visitors, it still bears the marks of a little-known episode of the D-Day campaign, the fighting known as Bloody Gulch in June 1944. Visitors can see its single-span elm roof frame shaped like an upturned hull, period woodwork and terraced gardens.
