To make a day of it

Donjon de Courmenant stands in Rouez (Sarthe), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Standing on a hillside above the Vègre valley, in the commune of Rouez, the Courmenant keep is now a ruined site whose origins are thought to go back to Carolingian times. The place is notable for an early defensive layout, dry ditches on three sides and a marsh protecting the fourth, and for the convergence of six old roads that once underlined its strategic and judicial importance. Visitors can still make out a doorjamb from the entrance and masonry remains reflecting building phases from the 9th to the 15th century.
