To make a day of it

Weilerhügel stands in Alsbach-Hähnlein (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Weilerhügel is a medieval motte, rising from the lowland plain between Hähnlein and Bickenbach, close to the A5 motorway. This earthen mound, still some eleven metres high, marks the site of a former stronghold linked to the lords of Bickenbach. Today only the earthworks and ditches remain, set within a damp, natural landscape rather than any standing building.

What to know

  • No building remains on site: what can be seen is an earthen mound, traces of ditches and a former outer bailey now used as an orchard meadow.
  • The mound can be reached on foot from the Alsbach-Hähnlein motorway rest area, over natural, sometimes damp ground.
  • Parts of the outer bailey and the ditches lie on private land, which limits access to certain areas.
  • The site lies within a protected nature reserve, so visitors are expected to keep to existing paths.
  • Digging or removing finds is prohibited without permission, as the site is protected as a Kulturdenkmal.
