To make a day of it

Jagdschloss Bickenbach stands in Bickenbach (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Jagdschloss Bickenbach, in Hesse, survives from a large hunting lodge complex built in the early eighteenth century for the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt. Of the original ensemble, arranged around a sizeable rectangular courtyard, the building known as the Großer Bau is the most visible remnant today, now serving as the town hall of Bickenbach. The appeal of the site lies less in any preserved interior than in the history of a vanished parforce-hunting estate, whose footprint can still be traced in the layout of the village.

What to know

  • The main surviving building now serves as the town hall and is not set up as a visitor attraction.
  • Interest lies mainly in the exterior architecture and the outline of the former walled estate, visible from Am Jagdschloss and Darmstädter Straße.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees apply, since the building is in ordinary administrative use.
  • The site sits in the centre of Bickenbach village, making it easy to reach on foot.
