To make a day of it

Wasserschloss Elmarshausen stands in Wolfhagen (Landkreis Kassel), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserschloss Elmarshausen stands in the smallest district of Wolfhagen, north of Kassel, on a site where a moated medieval stronghold already existed in the fifteenth century. The present building, raised in the Weser Renaissance style from 1515 onward for the Hessian councillor Hermann von der Malsburg, has remained in the hands of the same family ever since. Visitors can still make out the moat surrounding the near square courtyard, the chapel reworked in the eighteenth century, and the scrolled gables known as welsche Giebel that crown part of the roofline.

What to know

  • The castle remains the property of descendants of the von der Malsburg family and its main floors are still inhabited, which limits visiting.
  • The building stands in Elmarshausen, the smallest district of Wolfhagen, within the Habichtswald nature park.
  • A stud farm breeding Trakehner horses now operates on the neighbouring estate.
  • A mausoleum survives about 250 metres west of the castle, at the edge of the woods.
  • As no opening hours, fees or access conditions are published, checking locally before visiting is advisable.
