To make a day of it

Wasserburg Altenhausen stands in Schwäbisch Hall (Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wasserburg Altenhausen is the site of a long-vanished moated castle north of the hamlet of Altenhausen, within the town of Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg. Likely founded in the 13th century by a local noble family, it had already lost its residential role by the late 14th century before passing to the city of Hall and later to the Holy Spirit hospital. Today the mound has been leveled and most of the moat filled in; only faint ditch remains survive on the southern edge of the site. Visitors come for the archaeological trace in the landscape rather than for standing buildings.

What to know

  • No standing building remains, only subtle earthworks and faint moat traces on the southern edge of the site.
  • The site sits in open meadow with no visitor infrastructure, ticketing or set opening hours.
  • Access is via a field track near the road connecting Altenhausen and Veinau.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable, as the ground can be wet meadowland, especially after rain.
