Schloss Wolfshagen (Prignitz) stands in Groß Pankow (Prignitz) (Landkreis Prignitz), in Brandenburg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Wolfshagen stands on the edge of the Prignitz region, on the banks of the Stepenitz river, on the site where the Gans zu Putlitz family had already built a fortified castle in the 12th century, of which vaulted remains survive in the west wing. The present building dates largely from the late 18th century, when Albrecht Gottlob Gans Edler Herr zu Putlitz had a late Baroque wing constructed on the old foundations. Today it houses a museum displaying furniture, family portraits, a chapel reassembled from pieces rescued when the old castle church was demolished, and the blue porcelain collection assembled by Bernhard von Barsewisch. One room is also devoted to the princely grave discovered near Seddin.
What to know
- The castle houses a museum run by an association and a foundation rather than serving as a private residence.
- A basement room recreates an East German classroom, recalling the building's use as a school until 1998.
- The blue porcelain collection displayed upstairs ranks among the most significant of its kind in Europe.
- The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal.
- Much of the original wall decoration, including scenes referring to Frederick the Great, was destroyed during the 1952 conversion.
