To make a day of it

Schloss Tremsbüttel stands in Tremsbüttel (Kreis Stormarn), in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Schloss Tremsbüttel stands on the site of a medieval Wasserburg, the last stage in a construction history spanning nearly eight centuries. The present building, erected in the 1890s for the Hasenclever family, combines Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau elements in a style typical of Historicism, marked by its massive tower with a Gothic-inspired roof and entrance portal. Technically a Herrenhaus, it has long been called a Schloss because of its castle-like appearance. The house is known for having hosted the Beatles in 1966, during their only German tour.

What to know

  • The building served as a hotel until 2020 and then briefly as a private clinic opened in 2023, which has since ceased operations, severely limiting access to the interior.

  • The original agricultural estate was gradually dissolved by 1961 and is barely recognisable today.
  • The site is located in Tremsbüttel, in the Kreis Stormarn, Schleswig-Holstein.
