To make a day of it
Schloss Stein an der Traun stands in Traunreut (Landkreis Traunstein), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Stein Castle in Traunreut stands out for an arrangement rarely found in Germany: an upper castle perched atop a nearly fifty metre high nagelfluh rock face, a cave castle hollowed into the rock below that links the complex to the Traun valley, and a lower castle within the village itself. The origins of the upper house remain uncertain, with some tracing a fortification back to Roman or Celtic times, though Stein first appears in written records in the 12th century. The estate passed through several noble families, from the Toerrings to the Arco-Zinnebergs, before becoming home to a brewery and a private school now housed in the lower castle.
