Where
Schwedt/Oder

Schloss Schwedt stands in Schwedt/Oder (Landkreis Uckermark), in Brandenburg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schwedt Palace was the seat of the junior Hohenzollern line of Brandenburg-Schwedt, built from 1670 on the remains of a Renaissance building by the Dutch architect Cornelis Ryckwaert and later extended into a three-winged baroque complex by the early eighteenth century. Badly damaged by shelling in the spring of 1945, the ruined structure was blown up in 1962 on the orders of Walter Ulbricht, with the last remains cleared away by the end of the 1960s. A cultural centre housing the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt now stands on the site, while the former palace garden was redeveloped between 2009 and 2012 into the European Huguenot Park. Visitors can see copies of baroque sandstone sculptures after Friedrich Christian Glume, a sundial dating from 1740, and, since 2018, a 1:33 scale model of the vanished palace.

What to know

  • The European Huguenot Park, laid out on the former palace garden, can be freely explored outdoors.
  • A 1:33 scale model gives visitors an idea of the palace that was destroyed in 1962.
