Schloss Schwanberg stands in Rödelsee (Landkreis Kitzingen), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Schwanberg crowns the Schwanberg hill in the Steigerwald forest above Rödelsee, Bavaria. Celtic and later Franconian fortifications once stood on the same summit, long before a medieval castle was built here in the 13th century, destroyed during the Peasants' War and rebuilt from 1605 under Prince-Bishop Julius Echter. The present buildings, arranged as an irregular pentagon around an inner courtyard with a polygonal stair tower, still bear the marks of these successive rebuildings, including two round towers with rusticated stonework on the northeast side. Since 1957 the site has been home to a religious community.
What to know
- Since 1957 the Schloss has housed the Communität Casteller Ring, which limits access to the building's interior.
- The site sits on top of the Schwanberg hill in the Steigerwald, reached by a climb from Rödelsee.
- The surrounding gardens date from 1919 to 1921 and combine baroque layout with an English-style landscape park.
- St. Michael's church, built nearby in the 1980s, serves as the spiritual centre of today's community.
- The structure seen today results from successive rebuildings after the destructions of 1525 and 1633, not from an original medieval design.
