To make a day of it
Schloss Schönfeld (Altmark) stands in Bismark (Landkreis Stendal), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Schönfeld stands at the western entrance to the village of Schönfeld, part of the town of Bismark in Saxony-Anhalt. Built between 1873 and 1875 for Otto von Rundstedt, the building follows a historicist style drawing on Renaissance and Baroque forms, raised on a tall cellar base beneath a mansard hip roof. The north front features a three-bay projection housing the main portal, while to the south two uneven wings frame a wide balustraded terrace. The surrounding landscape park, laid out in 1885 by a pupil of Lenné, has been under nature protection since 1971.
What to know
- The Schloss now functions as an event venue and a branch of the Bismark civil registry office, rather than a museum open to the public on fixed hours.
- The park, covering more than 8.7 hectares in the style of an English landscape garden, holds ninety different tree species, including a giant sequoia.
- The estate went through very different uses after 1945: agricultural school, then a hotel until 2007, followed by a long period of vacancy.
- The interior retains stucco ceilings and wall paintings, mostly seen during events held on site.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony-Anhalt.
