To make a day of it

Burg Stendal stands in Stendal (Landkreis Stendal), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Stendal no longer exists, and that absence is itself the heart of its story: no visible remains of this medieval stronghold survive anywhere in the town of Stendal, in Saxony-Anhalt. First recorded in the mid-12th century through the office of its burgrave, the castle may actually date back to the 10th century, built to guard the roads and hinterland near the Elbe crossing at Tangermünde. Its location is known, however: the first collegiate church was raised within its ramparts in 1188, on the very spot where Stendal Cathedral now stands. The stronghold was likely dismantled towards the end of the 13th century, during the construction of the town's defensive walls.
