To make a day of it
Schloss Rheda stands in Rheda-Wiedenbrück (Kreis Gütersloh), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Rheda is a former moated castle built on an artificial sand mound amid the marshy lowlands of the upper Ems river, in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Its oldest surviving part, the thirteenth-century Kapellenturm, combines a gate tower, a double chapel and a residential tower in a single structure, a combination considered unusual in Westphalia. Since 1557 the estate has served as the principal seat of the princely house of Bentheim-Tecklenburg, which turned the medieval stronghold into a baroque residence. The outer bailey still keeps its eighteenth-century half-timbered buildings, which now house a carriage museum and a toy and costume museum.
What to know
- The castle is surrounded by an extensive historic park and lies on the Westphalian 100-Schlösser-Route.
- The outer bailey, encircled by a branch of the Ems river, houses a carriage museum in the former Marstall and a toy and costume museum in the Komödienhaus.
- The garden, laid out as early as 1623 and restored in 1988 according to nineteenth-century plans, surrounds the classical orangery.
- The castle's former music library has been on loan to the university library in Münster since 1966 and is no longer kept on site.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
