To make a day of it

Schloss Pretzsch stands in Bad Schmiedeberg (Landkreis Wittenberg), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Pretzsch stands on the banks of the Elbe, on a site already fortified as early as 981. The present building, raised from 1571 by the von Löser family and later altered around 1700, combines Saxon Renaissance features with additions from the Dresden Baroque period. Its history is tied to Christiane Eberhardine, wife of Augustus the Strong, who withdrew here and lived at the castle until her death in 1727. The surrounding park, laid out in the early eighteenth century, now belongs to the Gartenträume network of Saxony-Anhalt.

What to know

  • The building currently serves as a children's home, so the interior cannot be visited.
  • The surrounding park, part of the Gartenträume network of Saxony-Anhalt, can be seen from the outside.
  • Sandstone portals from the former town entrance and the old landing stage on the Elbe still stand in the park.
  • Little of the original interior decoration survives, owing to the building's later use as an orphanage and care home.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are published, so access is limited to the exterior and park grounds.
