Schloss Lichtenburg stands in Prettin, in the Landkreis Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt, on the site of a former Antonite monastic house. From 1574 Elector August of Saxony had a large Saxon Renaissance complex built here at the request of his wife Anna, together with a church dedicated to St Anne. Used as a dower residence for several electresses of Saxony until the early eighteenth century, the building later took on a very different role, serving in the nineteenth century as a penitentiary that held several hundred inmates. Visitors today can still trace the layered history of the site, from princely residence to the prison that closed in 1928.
