Schloss Oberellen stands at the heart of the village of Gerstungen, in Thuringia, right next to the parish church. This Renaissance manor was built from 1594 onward by a branch of the von Hanstein family, on the foundations of a former farmstead that had belonged to Reinhardsbrunn Abbey. Coats of arms from the early seventeenth century still decorate the portals of the main building, the best preserved part of what was once a four wing complex. The house also served as a home and studio for the painters A. Paul Weber and later Karl Meusel during the twentieth century.
