To make a day of it

Schloss Marksuhl stands in Marksuhl (Wartburgkreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Standing at the heart of the Thuringian village of Marksuhl, this Schloss began as a Renaissance hunting lodge and passed through several roles before becoming a municipal building. Built between 1587 and 1591 for Duke Johann Ernst, it briefly served as a ducal residence in the late seventeenth century, then was enlarged during the eighteenth century under the dukes of Saxe-Eisenach and Saxe-Weimar. Visitors can still make out the Renaissance facade of the main wing, decorated with carved heads and ornamented gables, along with the spiral staircase tower topped by a timber-framed lantern that marks the courtyard entrance. Together with the neighbouring St Hubertus church, the building forms the village's visual landmark, echoed even in its coat of arms.
