Schloss Wilhelmsthal lies seven kilometres south of Eisenach in the Elte valley, a former hunting lodge that grew into a summer residence for the dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Built up over several phases between 1709 and 1913, the complex combines Baroque and Rococo pavilions grouped around an oval festival hall, the Telemannsaal, regarded as one of Europe's oldest freestanding concert halls and associated with premieres by the composer Georg Philipp Telemann. The surrounding landscape park was reshaped in the mid 19th century following ideas of Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau.
