To make a day of it
Schloss Mühlhausen stands in Mühlhausen (Landkreis Erlangen-Höchstadt), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
Schloss Mühlhausen stands in Mühlhausen, in the Landkreis Erlangen-Höchstadt, Bavaria, on the site of a moated castle first built in the mid 14th century by the von Egloffstein family. The present building, a two storey four wing structure with hipped and gabled roofs, took its current form during a baroque rebuilding carried out between 1746 and 1748. A wide open area surrounding the house, the remnant of the moat that once encircled the medieval stronghold, still traces the outline of the former fortification. A sandstone bridge from the 18th century leads to the entrance, where the gate bears the von Egloffstein coat of arms twice.
What to know
- The Schloss has been privately owned since 1920, which limits access to the interior.
- A visit is mainly an outdoor one, taking in the architecture, the bridge and the coat of arms over the gate.
- The wide open area around the building marks the former moat of the medieval Wasserburg and can be walked around.
- The building is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria, and the surrounding ground as a Bodendenkmal.
