Schloss Marquardt stands in Potsdam, in Brandenburg, in the district that bears its name, away from the historic city centre. Its long history as a noble and later bourgeois residence saw it serve in turn as a manor house, a hotel, a military hospital and a university institute. It is also remembered for its ownership by General von Bischoffwerder, a close advisor to King Frederick William II and a follower of the Rosicrucians, who had a grotto built there for occult séances, now vanished. The estate, surrounded by a landscape park reshaped by Peter Joseph Lenné, is today mainly used as a filming location for cinema and television.
