To make a day of it

Schloss Horst stands in Stadtbezirk Gelsenkirchen-West (Gelsenkirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 16th century. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Horst stands at the center of the Horst district in Gelsenkirchen, on the site of a medieval fortress destroyed by fire in 1554. Rutger von der Horst had a four-winged residence built in its place in the second half of the 16th century, in the Dutch Mannerist style, now regarded as one of the most significant Renaissance buildings in Westphalia. Three of its four corner towers collapsed over time due to marshy ground and inadequate foundations, and the palace fell into long decline before being restored from the 1990s onward. A modern steel and glass roof now covers the former inner courtyard, which hosts exhibitions and cultural events.

What to know

  • The palace houses a museum dedicated to the period of its construction, set in the restored rooms.
  • The inner courtyard is covered by a modern steel and glass structure, used for cultural events.
  • The site also serves as a wedding venue for Gelsenkirchen's registry office, which may limit access to some areas during ceremonies.
  • The building lost three of its four original towers over the centuries due to collapses caused by the soft ground.
