To make a day of it

Schloss Berge stands in Stadtbezirk Gelsenkirchen-Nord (Gelsenkirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Berge stands on a moated island in the Buer district of Gelsenkirchen, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Originally a medieval fortified house, the estate was rebuilt as a manor in the 16th century and reshaped again in a classical style in the late 18th century under the counts of Westerholt-Gysenberg. The three-winged main house, open toward the west, still largely reflects that late 18th-century remodeling. The grounds also include a landscaped park and a recreated baroque garden, laid out around a large lake, the Berger See.

What to know

  • The main house today serves as a hotel and restaurant, not as a museum open for tours.
  • The park and the recreated baroque garden around the Berger See can be freely visited outdoors.
  • The building is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • A visit mainly means walking the grounds and the lakeside area, with no fixed visiting hours to plan around.
