To make a day of it

Schloss Guteborn stands in Guteborn (Landkreis Oberspreewald-Lausitz), in Brandenburg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Guteborn, in Guteborn, in the Landkreis Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Brandenburg, survives today only as scattered remains, the main building having been destroyed by an explosion in 1948 under orders from the communist authorities. The von Gersdorff family had the manor built from 1529 and rebuilt between 1564 and 1575, before it passed to the von Hoym family and later to the princes of Schönburg-Waldenburg. What remains are the former stables, the round chapel building and the castle pond, along with traces of the old moat. The site is also remembered as the place where the last king of Saxony, Friedrich August III, signed his abdication in November 1918.

What to know

  • The surrounding grounds are listed as a Baudenkmal together with the village centre.
  • No verified information on opening hours or admission fees is available for the site.
  • The site is best approached as a walk through the village and around the former estate rather than as a monument visit.
