To make a day of it
Burgwall von Senftenberg stands in Senftenberg (Landkreis Oberspreewald-Lausitz), in Brandenburg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgwall von Senftenberg no longer exists above ground: it was an Iron Age settlement site, excavated in the early 1930s shortly before being destroyed by an advancing open-pit lignite mine. The fortified enclosure, linked to the Billendorf culture, formed an irregular circle roughly 150 metres across in the lowlands of the Schwarze Elster river. Excavations uncovered more than a thousand postholes, houses arranged around a central open area, and bronze and wooden artefacts pointing to an organised community of around 650 people.
What to know
- No visible remains survive on site; the settlement was destroyed by open-pit lignite mining in 1932.
- Everything known about the site comes from archaeological excavations carried out in 1931 and 1932.
- The finds are preserved and studied elsewhere; there is nothing to visit in person.
- The site lay northeast of Senftenberg, toward the former village of Sedlitz, which itself disappeared due to mining.
