To make a day of it

Schloss Eschenau stands in Eckental (Landkreis Erlangen-Höchstadt), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Eschenau stands in Eckental on a former circular motte still surrounded by a moat visible from the air. Built in the early 11th century, it long belonged to the Nuremberg patrician family Muffel, including Jakob Muffel, a friend of the painter Albrecht Dürer, whose 1518 etching is thought by some art historians to show the view from the castle. Repeatedly destroyed in wartime and rebuilt, the building lost its tower, gables and top floor in an 1843 fire, so what remains today is a much simplified fragment of the once formidable stronghold.
