Schloss Eggermühlen is a moated manor built on the site of a medieval knight's seat said to date back to the 13th century. Owned by the von Boeselager family since the 17th century, the old house was expanded into a baroque complex from 1714 onward, complete with a brick orangery designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun. A neo-Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, containing a rococo altar from 1755, completes the ensemble. The estate remains inhabited and farmed, and is mainly experienced from its surrounding grounds and tree-lined approach.
What to know
- The estate still belongs to the von Boeselager family, who farm the surrounding agricultural and forest land.
- The outbuildings have been converted into holiday accommodation, while the main house remains a private residence.
- Access is generally limited to the exterior grounds, along the moat and the avenue leading up to the house.
- The neo-Gothic Saint Nicholas chapel was used for Catholic parish services until the 1950s.
