The ruins of Schloss Dwasieden stand on a wooded rise above the Baltic Sea, close to the harbour of Sassnitz on the island of Rügen. Built between 1873 and 1877 for the Berlin banker Adolph von Hansemann, the mansion was once among the most lavish houses in northern Germany, its façades faced with granite, sandstone and marble. Blown up in 1948, only fragments of walls, remains of pavilions and the burnt-out stables survive today, drawing mostly those interested in abandoned places.
