The Jagdschloss Granitz stands on a wooded hilltop near Binz, within the Southeast Rügen biosphere reserve. This hunting lodge was built for Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus between 1837 and 1846, in a style inspired by North Italian Renaissance castles, following designs by Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer and later Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Its 38-metre central tower, added in 1844 to Schinkel's plans, contains a spiral staircase of 154 cast-iron steps leading to a viewing platform overlooking the south and east of the island. Now run as a museum, the building displays old hunting weapons, 19th-century furniture and exhibitions on the estate's history.
