Dachau Palace stands on the Schlossberg hill above the old town of Dachau in Bavaria. Of the once four-winged residence built for the Wittelsbach dukes, only the western wing survives, the one containing the great banqueting hall, the other three having been torn down in the early 19th century after damage caused by Napoleonic troops. Its main feature is the carved Renaissance ceiling from the 1560s, reinstalled in its original hall in the late 1970s, alongside the Régence-style staircase and facade commissioned by Elector Max Emanuel in the early 18th century. The terraced garden below gives views stretching toward the Bavarian Alps.
