To make a day of it
Schloss Canstein stands in Marsberg (Hochsauerlandkreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
Schloss Canstein stands on a steep limestone outcrop above the narrow valley of the Orpe river, near Marsberg. Fortified since Germanic times, the site carried a medieval burg before being transformed into a manor house in the early modern period. The complex today consists of the main residence, known as the Oberschloss, and a former outer bailey, the Unterschloss, with its pointed-arch gateway. Remains of a keep with a dungeon can still be seen, along with a barrel-vaulted room pierced with arrow slits dating from the 12th to the 14th century.
What to know

- The property has remained with the same family, the von Elverfeldt, since 1853, which may limit access to parts of the building.
- Visitor interest lies mainly in the exterior architecture and the medieval remains of the keep and vaulted chamber, rather than in museum displays.
