To make a day of it
Schloss Börnicke stands in Bernau bei Berlin (Landkreis Barnim), in Brandenburg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Börnicke stands in the village of Börnicke, part of Bernau bei Berlin in Brandenburg. Its manor house dates back to around 1751, but the building seen today owes its appearance to a remodelling carried out between 1909 and 1911 by architect Bruno Paul for the banker Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, who used it as a summer residence. The rendered two-storey building, with its mansard roof and tower, sits within a landscape park that includes a pond and a small island. Restored gradually since the early 2000s, the estate now also houses a car museum in its former farm buildings.
What to know
- Through the 20th century the house served in turn as a private residence, a recovery home, a Soviet military hospital, and finally a home for disabled children until 1992.
- Since 2003 the property has belonged to Schloss Börnicke gGmbH, which oversees its restoration together with architect Rupert Stuhlemmer.
- The former stables now host the Brandenburgisches Automobilmuseum.
- The landscape park, laid out in the second half of the 19th century, still features a pond with an island and formal gardens near the house.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Brandenburg.
