Schloss Bergfeld stands on a plateau near Eisenschmitt, in the Landkreis Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rhineland-Palatinate, bordering the woodland known as the Franzosenwald. Built from 1900 as a hunting lodge for the Düsseldorf industrialist Hugo von Gahlen, to designs by architect Max Wöhler, it displays the turrets, battlements and gables typical of the period's revival of medieval castle style. German Emperor Wilhelm II was once a guest there, the best-known episode in its history. A small park with old and rare trees surrounds the building, and its inner courtyard still holds a fountain topped by a knight's statue.
