Schloss Agathenburg is a small brick château built in the mid seventeenth century by Count Hans Christoph von Königsmarck, a short distance from Stade. Raised in the restrained style of Dutch Renaissance architecture, it is a cubic three storey structure with a polygonal stair tower on the courtyard side and a sandstone portal as its only decoration. The interior suffered heavily in a fire in 1921, but the seventeenth century vaulted cellar and a manorial hall on the first floor have survived. The building now functions as a cultural centre, with exhibitions, concerts and a café.
