To make a day of it

Burg Horneburg stands in Horneburg (Landkreis Stade), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Horneburg was a late medieval moated stronghold built from 1255 by the Archbishop of Bremen in the marshy Sietland area, on a branch of the river Lühe. Its roughly circular layout, about thirty by forty metres, held a stone tower surrounded by a water-filled moat, linked by a drawbridge to an outer bailey where the garrison families each kept their own house. The settlement that grew up around its three access causeways became the town of Horneburg itself, though the fortress was abandoned and largely lost over time, leaving a historic site rather than a standing building.
