To make a day of it
Ruine Wildberg stands in Sulzfelder Forst (Landkreis Rhön-Grabfeld), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Ruine Wildberg sits on the tip of a rocky spur of the Großer Breitenberg, at 455 metres above sea level, within the Sulzfelder Forst woodland in Bavaria. Of this medieval stronghold only fragments of walls remain, along with the vaulted remains of a cellar and a system of ditches and ramparts that once protected its only vulnerable side, to the east. Founded in the 12th century by the lords of Wildberg, it was destroyed during the German Peasants' War in 1525 and never rebuilt. The site can be visited today as a forest ruin, without any tourist infrastructure.
What to know
- The site lies deep in the forest, away from any paved road, and is reached on foot via forest tracks.
- There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is a ruin in a natural setting rather than a managed monument.
- Only wall fragments, ditches, a rampart and a vaulted cellar remain, with no standing building.
- Information panels have been set up by the municipality of Sulzfeld and the forestry administration of Bad Königshofen.
- Sturdy footwear is advisable, as the forest terrain is uneven and sloped.
