To make a day of it

Ruine Reichelsburg stands in Aub (Landkreis Würzburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Reichelsburg, also known as Burg Reichelsberg, stands as a ruin on a rocky spur above the Gollach valley, near the village of Baldersheim, now part of the town of Aub. This late medieval stronghold, long held by the bishopric of Würzburg, was stormed and partly destroyed by rebellious peasants in 1525, then slowly decayed and was further dismantled by nearby villagers during the 19th century. Visitors today find a keep still standing at over twenty metres, remains of a double ring wall with flanking towers, a wide moat and a deep well in the inner courtyard.

What to know

  • The ruin stands on a height above the Gollach valley, reached by a path from Baldersheim.
  • The keep can be climbed via a metal staircase that replaced the earlier wooden one.
  • A modern footbridge, the Truchsessbrücke, now crosses the moat on the foundations of the former drawbridge.
  • The site hosts an annual festival organised by a local music association from Baldersheim-Burgerroth.
  • No opening hours or fees are given in the available information, and the ruin appears freely accessible from outside.
