Where
Salem

Müggenburg stands in Salem (Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg), in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Müggenburg is a vanished medieval motte site, its remains preserved at the western edge of the Salemer Moor nature reserve near Salem. The site consisted of a fortified mound carrying a keep, together with an outer bailey once protected by an earthen rampart and water-filled ditches. Its earliest known owners were the lords of Salem and later, through marriage, the lords of Plön, before the estate passed to the dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg. Excavations in the 19th century and again in 1951 uncovered the foundations of a six by six metre tower and evidence of timber-framed buildings.

What to know

  • No standing building remains; only the mound, the rampart and the former ditches can still be made out on site.
  • The site lies at the edge of the Salemer Moor nature reserve, so visitors should expect a walk through natural terrain rather than a furnished monument.
  • No opening hours, admission fee or visitor facilities are indicated, the site is freely accessible.
  • What can be seen today results from archaeological excavations carried out in the 19th century and again in 1951.
