Burg Krummesse sits in a quiet corner of the Lübeck district, on the edge of the historic Lauenburg region, at a spot where an old trade road once crossed the Stecknitz canal. This is not a castle with rooms to tour but the remains of a medieval motte, the only one of its kind preserved within present-day Lübeck. The mound, roughly 80 metres across, can still be made out behind a row of houses, ringed by ditches and silted former wetlands. It was once the seat of the knights of Krummesse, a powerful family in the medieval Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg.
