Where
Horst

Oldenburger Wall stands in Horst (Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg), in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Oldenburger Wall is a former Slavic ring fortification located between Neu-Horst and Lehmrade, set on a natural rise surrounded by low-lying ground. What remains today is an earthen ring still clearly visible, about seven metres high on the outside and three metres on the inside, enclosing an area roughly sixty metres across. Excavations carried out in the early and mid twentieth century uncovered animal bones and pottery fragments dating from the eighth to the early ninth century. Geomagnetic surveys later showed that the interior held no buildings, while an unfortified Slavic settlement lay between the mound and the nearby Oldenburger See.

What to know

  • This is an outdoor archaeological site, an earthen rampart, not a built castle.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the site sits in open countryside.
  • It lies between Neu-Horst and Lehmrade on a mound surrounded by low ground, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • Nothing stands inside the ring itself, the interest lies in the earthwork's shape and scale.
  • The site is protected as a Bodendenkmal, an archaeological ground monument.
