To make a day of it

Hohe Schanze stands in Freden (Leine) (Landkreis Hildesheim), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Hohe Schanze is an early medieval hilltop fortification on a spur of the Sackwald forest, standing 326 metres high near Winzenburg. It consists of several successive earthworks of banks and ditches, the outermost line dating back to the pre-Roman Iron Age, while the main medieval stronghold occupied the central part of the spur. Excavations uncovered a timber-lined gate passage, the foundations of a tower, a chapel and wooden houses, now marked along a historical trail. No standing walls remain today, only earthen ramparts partly covered by shrubs.
