To make a day of it

Burgwall Janow stands in Spantekow (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgwall Janow is a former Slavic hillfort, now reduced to earthworks, located roughly three kilometres south of the village on a slope overlooking the Große Landgraben stream. Built between the 7th and 9th centuries, it consists of a single enclosure measuring about 120 by 80 metres, still traceable in the terrain though nothing stands above ground. Hidden within a heathland wood, the site was quickly overgrown after its abandonment, which helped preserve its earthworks. Excavations in 1982 uncovered early Slavic pottery and a rotary quern, now held in the museum at Waren.

What to know

  • No structures remain above ground, only the outline of the earthen rampart is visible in the landscape.
  • The site lies hidden in woodland about three kilometres south of Janow and requires a walk through the forest.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, access is free and unsupervised.
  • Finds from the 1982 excavations are not displayed on site but kept at the museum in Waren.
  • The sloped, unmaintained ground can be difficult to cross in wet weather.
