To make a day of it

Burgstall Weidenstein stands in Bad Steben (Landkreis Hof), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Weidenstein marks the location of a former hilltop castle, now vanished, which once overlooked the village of Thierbach near Bad Steben. Set on a rocky outcrop at 570 metres above sea level, the site benefited from natural defences thanks to its steep slope toward the Froschbach valley. A neck ditch with an outer rampart is still visible, along with scattered stone rubble across the grounds, the only remains of a structure that has long since disappeared. The site is a stop along a hiking trail dedicated to former castle sites in the Frankenwald region.

What to know

  • No standing structures remain, only a defensive ditch and scattered stone rubble.
  • Access is on foot, via the Frankenwaldverein hiking trail dedicated to former castle sites.
  • The site lies near Thierbach, a district of Bad Steben.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, as this is an open-air natural site.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable given the sloped and rocky terrain.
