Burg Schauenstein stands on a rocky spur above the town of Schauenstein in the Frankenwald forest region. Built around 1230 by Otto I von Schaumberg, who then took the name Otto von Schauenstein, it passed through several hands over the centuries, including the Wolfstriegel family and later the burgraves of Nuremberg, before becoming the seat of the bailiffs of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. It now houses the local history museum of Schauenstein and the Upper Franconian Fire Brigade Museum. The castle park contains a rock formation known as the Watching Maiden.
