The Burg Lichtenberg rises above the historic town center that bears its name, on a rocky spur at the edge of the Selbitz valley. Likely built as early as the 12th century by the Dukes of Merania, it later passed to the Counts of Orlamünde and then to the von Waldenfels family, before being destroyed during the Second Margrave War, rebuilt as a residence, burned again in the Thirty Years' War, and finally left in ruins.
