To make a day of it

Burgstall Traunstein stands in Traunstein (Landkreis Traunstein), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burgstall Traunstein marks the site of a vanished hilltop fortification, set on a spur of the Bürgerwald at 610 metres above the southern bank of the Traun river near Traunstein. No standing structures remain today, but archaeological excavations uncovered two successive occupation phases, one dating to the Ottonian period and the other to the High Middle Ages. Visitors come mainly for the archaeological trace in the landscape, an arc-shaped rampart and ditch cut into the spur.

  • Reaching it involves a walk through the forest on the Bürgerwald spur, with no visitor infrastructure.

  • The interest lies mainly in its archaeological and landscape value rather than any standing monument.
