The Burgstall Hohenstein marks the site of a vanished medieval castle on a rocky spur on the northern slope of the Schnappenberg, at an elevation of 690 metres. Built in the mid 11th century by Count Marquart I of Hohenstein, it passed in the 13th century to the Wittelsbach duke Henry XIII of Lower Bavaria before falling into ruin by the late 14th century. The now forested site retains no standing remains of the inner or outer ward, though the outline of the two defensive ditches separating them can still be made out.
