To make a day of it

Burgstall Hochstein stands in Bissingen (Landkreis Dillingen an der Donau), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

On a rocky spur rising 40 meters above the Wildbach valley west of Bissingen lie the sparse remains of a medieval stronghold long since vanished. Of the seat of the lords of Hochstein nothing survives but traces in the ground and marks cut into the rock, since the structure itself is entirely gone. A Baroque chapel from the 17th century, dedicated to St Margaret, now stands on the site, built directly over what was once the entrance to the fortified plateau. Inside, a two-column altar from its construction period and seven votive panels from the 18th and 19th centuries can still be seen.

What to know

  • The site, called a Burgstall because the stronghold itself has disappeared, now consists only of a rocky spur and a Baroque chapel.
  • Access is free and unrestricted, with no opening hours or admission fee, as it is an open-air site.
  • A visit mainly involves a walk up to the rocky plateau, with a few steps leading to the chapel.
  • Visitors should not expect standing castle walls or towers, since most of the structure burned down or was destroyed by the 15th century.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
