To make a day of it

Schloss Höchstädt stands in Höchstädt an der Donau (Landkreis Dillingen an der Donau), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 6 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Höchstädt stands in Höchstädt an der Donau, in the Landkreis Dillingen an der Donau, Bavaria, as one of the notable buildings of late German Renaissance architecture. Built between 1589 and 1603 for Count Palatine Philipp Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg, it incorporates a Gothic keep from an earlier structure that deliberately breaks the symmetry of its four round corner towers. Inside, visitors find stuccoed ceilings, original wall paintings and inlaid doors, along with a chapel whose decoration reflects the Protestant faith kept by Duchess Anna von Jülich-Kleve-Berg, who lived there as a widow. The building today houses exhibition rooms, a knights' hall and a museum devoted to German faience.

What to know

  • The castle houses the Museum Deutscher Fayencen, dedicated to ceramics and open since 2010.
  • The castle chapel is now used as a concert hall.
  • A permanent exhibition on the second floor covers the Second Battle of Höchstädt of 1704.
  • Restoration carried out since the 1980s has made nearly the entire building accessible to visitors.
  • The Gothic keep, a remnant of an earlier structure, stands out clearly from the rest of the Renaissance facade.
